Preparing Your Garden For 2021
Spring Harvesting McHenry County Illinois 2021
It's another year of learning and growing.
This is my 3rd year of having a back garden in an urban area, in this case, McHenry Illinois, where I (and my wife) have created a vegetable, herb, fruit, and flower garden that has produced great results for us.
Today's post is just a quick update on our first of the year Spring harvest. We already have plucked some tasty baby sorrel leaves and fragrant chives.
Chives will probably go in my mash potatoes and sorrel will make a delicious goat's cheese salad.
On Sunday, myself, Angela, and our 8-year-old, Lilly, got stuck into some garden work. Lots of cleaning, trimming, plucking, and preparation for the year ahead. Lots of grafting and fun.
So, we have prepared our vegetable plot in which I plan to grow potatoes with companion plants such as onions, cabbages, lettuce, sage and spinach etc that I will also use on my clients.
I have added new soil, manure, and compost to our Peach Tree Fruit Guild which last year produced strawberries, a range of mints, thyme, yarrow, green onions, kale, spinach, asparagus, green beans, lemon balm,
And for the first time, I have built two raised vegetable beds and from these, we plan to grow tomatoes, beans, cayenne peppers, bell peppers, zucchinis, eggplants, celery, and a range of herbs.
It is all a learning process so stay tuned as I will post progress as well as photos.
Are you growing anything?
Any tips or advice for a novice gardener in Illinois?
Happy spring, happy planting.
